Compare two essential Elton John 2LP vinyl releases: the romantic Love Songs compilation and the classic Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player album.
Quick answer
Choose Love Songs 2LP if you want a curated collection of Elton John's greatest ballads on vinyl. Pick Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player 2LP if you prefer a full classic studio album with hits like 'Crocodile Rock' and 'Daniel'. Both are high-quality 2LP pressings, but serve different listening moods.
Why the album type matters
Love Songs is a compilation that gathers 17 of Elton John's most beloved ballads from across his career, making it a one-stop shop for his soft, emotional side. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player, on the other hand, is a single studio album from 1973, offering a cohesive artistic statement with a mix of rock and pop that defined his early 70s sound.
If you enjoy hearing an artist's evolution through a themed collection, Love Songs delivers. If you prefer the context of a complete album with its original track sequence, Don't Shoot Me is the better fit.
Pressing details and collectibility
The Don't Shoot Me 2LP is pressed on Propeller Splatter vinyl for Record Store Day 2023, a limited edition that adds visual appeal and collectible value. The Love Songs 2LP is a 2022 remastered edition of a previously rare vinyl release, faithfully repackaged to its original design. Original copies of Love Songs on vinyl were extremely limited and now trade for high prices, so this reissue is a practical way to own it.
Both are 2LP sets, so you get more vinyl surface area for the music, often resulting in better sound quality compared to single-LP compressions.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Love Songs 2LP: Buy this if you want a ready-made playlist of Elton's greatest ballads, including 'Sacrifice' and 'Candle in the Wind', without flipping through multiple albums. The 2022 remaster ensures modern sound quality. Great for casual fans or those who want a romantic, mellow listening session.
- Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player 2LP: Buy this if you want a complete classic album experience with rock and pop hits. The Propeller Splatter vinyl makes it a standout collectible for Record Store Day enthusiasts. Ideal for fans who appreciate album context and limited-edition vinyl aesthetics.
- Compilation vs. studio album: Compilations like Love Songs offer variety across eras but lack the unified theme of a single album. Studio albums like Don't Shoot Me provide a cohesive artistic journey but may not include all your favorite hits. Think about whether you prefer a greatest-hits style collection or a deep dive into one classic album.
