Learn how to pick the best Elton John vinyl pressing for your collection, from live albums to remastered studio records.
Quick answer
To choose the right Elton John vinyl pressing, decide what matters most: sound quality, rarity, or a specific era. For a live experience, choose the One Night Only live album; for a studio classic, pick a remastered 2LP like The Big Picture.
What to consider before you buy
Elton John's catalog spans decades, and vinyl pressings vary in sound quality, packaging, and availability. Some are remastered from original tapes, while others capture a live moment. Knowing what you want helps narrow the choices.
If you're new to vinyl, a 2LP pressing often provides better sound quality than a single LP because more grooves mean less compression. Look for remastered editions that promise a fresh cut from the original master.
Decision rules for picking your pressing
- If you want a live concert experience: Choose One Night Only – The Greatest Hits Live Remastered 2LP. It captures a real performance and includes many of his biggest hits. Check the tracklist to see if your favorite live versions are included.
- If you prefer studio recordings with modern collaborations: Go for The Lockdown Sessions. It's a studio album with a mix of genres and features, so it's perfect if you enjoy hearing Elton with today's artists. If you're a fan of 'Cold Heart', this is the album to get.
- If you value remastered sound quality: Look for pressings that mention remastering from original tapes, like The Big Picture. This ensures a cleaner, more detailed sound. Check the liner notes for mastering credits to confirm the source.
- If you want a collectible or rare edition: Consider limited editions like Love Songs, which was extremely limited on vinyl and now fetches high prices. A 2022 remastered version is available. Act quickly if you find a limited pressing, as they sell out.
