A detailed look at the 50th anniversary edition of Elton John's classic album, including what's on each disc and who should buy it.
Quick answer
The Captain Fantastic 50th Anniversary 2CD set is the definitive way to experience Elton John's autobiographical 1975 album, pairing the original master with a second disc of early takes and rarities.
What makes this edition special
This 50th anniversary edition celebrates the album that tells the story of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's early struggles in London. The original album was a commercial and critical hit, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and staying there for seven weeks. The 2CD set expands on that legacy with a second disc of material that offers a deeper look into the album's creation.
Who should consider a different version
If you already own a previous deluxe or remastered edition of Captain Fantastic, the new material on disc two may overlap with what you already have. Check the tracklist to see if the bonus tracks are new to you. For casual listeners who just want the original album, the standard single CD or digital version is more affordable and takes up less shelf space.
Decision rules for the 50th Anniversary 2CD
- You want the full story: Buy this set if you're interested in the album's autobiographical concept and want to hear how the songs evolved. The second disc provides that context.
- You're a completionist collector: If you collect Elton John anniversary editions, this 2CD set is a natural addition. It offers a curated selection of bonus material that complements the original album. Check your existing collection for overlapping bonus tracks before purchasing.
- You're on a budget or just want the hits: Skip the 2CD set if you only want the original album or the single 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight'. The standard single CD or digital version costs less.
